Children Learning to Entertain Themselves
Wednesday, 16 June 2010 21:49
Teaching and encouraging your children to entertain themselves allows them to solve problems, gain confidence, and become self-reliant.

1.     What important question do parents need to ask if they are having difficulty with the idea of children entertaining themselves?

  • Parents need to ask the question, am I involved in entertaining my children because they need me, or is it because I need them.

2.     How different does this look at different ages?

  • Babies -- Give then small intervals of independent time, allowing your child to choose from several age appropriate toys.
  • Toddlers -- This is when the imagination is developing.  Help your child begin the play process. Stay connected but allow independent play.
  • Preschoolers -- Kids this age are capable of abstract imagination.  Be available while they play, but do not dominate.

Thursday, 10 June 2010 05:53

Working from home is becoming more and more popular.  What things should you consider before making this move?

What are some of the common challenges involved in working from home?

1.     The pluses actually can be the challenges...

  • Be my own boss - Will I give myself too much time off?  Or, will I be too demanding?  What am I supposed to be doing?
  • Set my own hours - Can I get by with a 25 hour work week?  How will I schedule my day?
  • Make as much income as I want - IF you have the clients/customers who are willing to pay. Be prepared for fluctuations in income.

Thursday, 03 June 2010 05:46

Past studies suggest that most U.S. parents do not teach their children about finances. The recession, however, may have changed things and encouraged parents to help their children learn and understand more about the financial world and personal money management.

  • What is the key for determining which financial details to share and how specific a parent should be?
    • Information needs to be age appropriate.
    • Share more details as your children become more interested and ask questions.

Chores can provide an ideal way to build responsibility in your children. It's a parent's responsibility to give their kids the opportunity to do chores. I don't believe it is old fashion, it is a great way to help children become successful adults!

What are the benefits of giving your children chores?

  • They learn important household skills.
  • They feel needed and significant
  • They learn to appreciate the work others do around the house.

Encouraging Healthy Confidence And Independence In Your 2-Year Old [Part 2].
Thursday, 20 May 2010 06:30

Recently we talked about helping teenagers prepare for responsible adulthood. You suggested that the process begin at an early age. Today, let's take a look at building responsibility and confidence in young children.

What are some practical ways to instill basic responsibilities in your young toddler?

  • Picking up their clothes (as early as 2 years)
    1. Provide easy access to the hamper.
    2. Have them sort between white and dark clothes.
    3. Make it fun! Perhaps it's 2 points for every "basket" they make.
